Accounting Clerks who provide clerical support in for-profit and non-profit settings are in demand throughout Canada.

The Job

Work realities:
Accounting Clerks work under a variety of titles in many business settings as they process financial records. They may also perform many other clerical duties as part of their job. They usually have a nine-to-five schedule, with overtime often required.

Duties:
Accounting Clerks calculate, prepare, and process invoices, bills, accounts receivable, accounts payable, purchase orders, payroll, reports, and other financial records. Their tasks might include coding, batching, entering, and reconciling accounting documents before entering them into computer software or a manual ledger. They may also compile data for budgets and reports, keep track of costs, or perform other duties specific to the company, as well a wide range of basic office tasks. There may be a customer service component, depending on the company.

Future possibilities:
Accounting Clerks can achieve supervisory status with experience or specialise in areas such as payroll, administration, collection, or other industry-specific jobs.

 

Accounting Clerk positions require an attention to detail, a facility with numbers, and an ability to become proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and certain accounting software. Since talking with vendors and customers is an important component of many Accounting Clerk jobs, good communication skills and a competent phone manner are valuable assets.

Required Skills and Training

Education:
Accounting Clerks can obtain entry-level jobs with a high school diploma.

Experience:
Having two years of experience or more working in an office opens up jobs with higher pay and more responsibility.

Skills and Certifications:
Accounting Clerks often need to be bondable. Though many entry-level positions offer on-the-job training, proficiency in office productivity and accounting software is the key to being hired for better-paying jobs. French and English fluency is a plus.
