Job Description: FORKLIFT OPERATOR
Shipping, receiving and warehousing is an important field in the Canadian economy. Forklift operators help keep these fields moving smoothly. These jobs are in high demand, with skilled operators being paid well in almost every part of the country.
The forklift operator will work in a warehouse or dockyard, where products or equipment are stored on pallets, stacked on housing racks. The environments are fast moving, industrial spaces. Candidates will work full-time shift work at a variety of start times, sometimes overnight.
The operator will report to the warehouse supervisor, who in charge of filling orders and maintaining the organization of the warehouse or dockyard.
The Forklift Operator is responsible for operating a forklift to move, locate, relocate, stack, and count merchandise. The operator is accountable for the safe and efﬁcient operation of the vehicle and may also be required to perform fill orders and check the accuracy of other orders. As well, operators will be responsible to ensure the working order of their forklifts prior to use.
Forklift operators can be promoted to warehouse supervisors, just as they can be trained on larger more complex machines used in the shipping industry, like cranes.
To be success forklift operators must have a strong spatial awareness a dedication to workplace safety and the ability to organize and sort with detail. Strong communication and technical skills are highly valuable.
Required Skills and Training
A high school education is preferred, however proficiency in either English or French is the only hard requirement.
Some companies do hire untrained, operators, however most are looking for labourers with 1-3 years of experience. Any previous work within a warehouse is highly valuable however certifications are most often required.
Skills and Certifications:
Workplace safety training and a forklift operation certificate.
