the Electrical Design Engineer collaborates with a team of skilled professionals in mechanical, electrical, and project management to design electrical systems grounded in sound engineering principles. Responsibilities
Attend project kickoff meetings to understand project specifications, expectations, and timelines, while providing technical insights into electrical system functionality. The Electrical Design Engineer will also estimate hours and material costs.
Develop and prepare electrical designs and drawings from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets, and other data, using Design Requests and adhering to sound engineering principles.
Create and maintain electrical schematics and other supporting drawings using EPLAN and AutoCAD electrical software throughout the build cycle. This involves consulting with various departments, project managers/engineers, and fabrication teams, making necessary adjustments to electrical drawings before and after the build cycle.
Ensure that equipment design meets all functional requirements, including rate capacity, strength, reliability, and service life, using standard engineering tools such as sizing software, component calculations, and, if needed, prototype testing.
Guarantee system performance reliability and conformance to customer specifications.
Design in accordance with company standards and departmental procedures.
Monitor budget and schedule commitments during the design phase, reporting significant deviations to the Engineering Supervisor.
Oversee the research phase for purchasing electrical parts, contacting vendors to evaluate price, quality, and delivery. The Electrical Design Engineer will justify product selections to the Project Manager and submit purchase orders for electrical components.
Maintain engineering drawing packages and other supporting documentation, ensuring conformance to standards.
Schedule, lead, and document minutes for design reviews throughout the design cycle.
Address electrical issues on the shop floor or at customer sites, which may involve site visits or coordinating investigations to determine failure modes, root causes, repair needs, and design improvements.
Assist the Engineering Supervisor in achieving quality and reliability goals, as well as researching new electrical devices and methods.
Attend project update meetings to ensure projects are on budget and on schedule, providing updates on the progress of electrical designs.
Participate in post-project evaluations to discuss successes and areas for improvement.
Collaborate with other departments and integrate safety concepts into the equipment design, based on risk analysis developed by the Project Manager, addressing both individual/human and machine safety elements.
Create and maintain safety validation documentation, including SISTEMA files.
Respond to inquiries and provide technical support related to electrical design.
Develop design-related documentation, such as operating, setup, repair, and maintenance manuals, as well as spare part lists and recommendations.
Assist with research and development investigations as directed.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information in line with company policies and procedures.
Ensure that all departmental procedures, health and safety policies, and responsibilities under OHSA are followed during all work activities on-site and at other locations.
Qualifications
Post-secondary diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).
At least three (3) years of experience as an Electrical Engineer in an industrial, engineering, or automation setting.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Capable of writing routine reports and correspondence.
Able to effectively speak in front of groups, including customers or company employees.
Expertise in developing electrical designs for complex automated systems using engineering principles.
Knowledge of electrical systems, including 400/480/600VAC 3-phase, controls, I/O systems, servo control, safety circuits, and pneumatics.
Familiarity with modular cabling technologies, cable tray systems, and electrical installations.
Electrical wiring experience and familiarity with mechanical systems (an asset).
Knowledge of industry standards, sound engineering practices, and electrical codes, with a commitment to adhering to relevant standards.
Experience in safety system design, particularly assessing safety circuits to ensure compliance with relevant standards and expected performance levels.
Basic understanding of robotic operations, including mechanical, electrical, and software interfacing.
Familiarity with conveying and material handling equipment (an asset).
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to engage with all levels of staff, customers, vendors, and other stakeholders professionally and effectively.
Experience with EPLAN and AutoCAD Electrical.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other commonly used software; must be able to learn and use ERP systems and other relevant software.
This position may require up to 20% travel.
