Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor, the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer works with mechanical, electrical, and project management teams to design systems that meet performance, reliability, and customer specifications. As a subject matter expert, they ensure engineering methods and standards are up to date, provide training, technical guidance, and review team members' work. This role also focuses on improving the quality and reliability of the company's systems.

Responsibilities
Develop and prepare mechanical designs and drawings based on preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, and other data, ensuring compliance with sound engineering practices.
Create and maintain mechanical assembly, detail drawings, and support documents using CAD programs like AutoCAD 2D, Autodesk Inventor, and Creo, as well as PDM software such as Vault and Windchill, throughout the build cycle. Coordinate with other departments, project managers/engineers, and fabrication groups to make necessary adjustments.
Ensure equipment design meets functional requirements, including capacity, strength, reliability, and service life, using standard engineering practices and tools such as FEA and prototype testing.
Ensure system performance aligns with customer specifications and reliability expectations.
Attend project kick-off meetings to understand project specifications, timelines, and expectations, while offering technical input on mechanical system functionality and providing estimates for hours and material costs.
Develop design-related documentation, including operating, setup, repair, and maintenance manuals.
Adhere to company standards and department procedures throughout the design process.
Monitor budget and schedule during the design cycle, reporting deviations to the Engineering Supervisor.
Conduct research on mechanical parts, contacting vendors to assess price, quality, and delivery, and justify product choices to the Project Manager.
Complete and archive drawing sets and design-related documentation, including calculations and manufacturing decisions, upon project completion.
Schedule, chair, and document design reviews throughout the design cycle.
Assist the Workshop Supervisor with mechanical issues on the shop floor or at supplier/customer sites, offering troubleshooting assistance and drawing revisions.
Participate in production testing to ensure system performance and reliability.
Use FEA software to validate structural integrity of designs where necessary.
Review and check the accuracy of designs, calculations, and reports from other team members, offering technical guidance and support.
Attend project update meetings to ensure projects stay on budget and schedule, providing progress updates on mechanical design.
Participate in post-mortem meetings to review project outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement.
Assist the Engineering Supervisor in achieving quality and reliability goals and researching new mechanical devices and methods.
Collaborate with other departments to integrate safety concepts into equipment design, addressing both human and machine safety concerns.
Respond to inquiries from employees, departments, and customers, providing technical support for mechanical design issues.
Troubleshoot field problems, which may include site visits or coordinating field service investigations to analyze failure modes, conduct root cause analysis, and recommend design improvements.
Support research and development projects as directed.
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with company policies.
Ensure compliance with departmental procedures, health and safety policies, and OHSA responsibilities during all work activities on-site and at the company’s Grimsby location.
Qualifications
Post-secondary diploma or degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licensed as a Professional Engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), in good standing.
5+ years of relevant experience as a Mechanical Engineer in an industrial, engineering, or automation environment.
Expertise in developing mechanical designs for complex automated systems from basic concepts.
Experience with AutoCAD 2D, Autodesk Inventor, CREO, and Solidworks is required.
Experience with ANSYS or other FEA software is an asset.
Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software is an asset.
This position is up to 20% travel. A valid driver’s license and good driving record are required. Must have or be eligible to obtain a passport for international travel.
