process engineer job description

work realities:

Though Process Engineering job are often associated with chemical engineering, the need for engineers to develop and oversee processes cuts across discipline lines. Most work in a plant setting, but perform some duties in an office. Some might work in functional areas in the plant.

Process Engineers research, design, develop, and analyze the processes that get things done. They often oversee operations and maintenance, with an eye to improving function and efficiency. Some Process Engineers work in the front-end phase of a project as they help determine how operations should be set up, but often contribute to quality control and process improvement throughout the life cycle of a process.

future possibilities:

Process Engineers can move into senior engineering and supervisory positions or pursue opportunities in science, engineering, sales, marketing or management.

Process Engineers need specialized training in an engineering discipline, but must be problem solvers with an inquiring mind in order to evaluate, design, maintain, and improve systems. Since their job is to design and evaluate processes, they must be adept at communicating their ideas and findings to workers, team members, colleagues, clients, and management. They may be called upon to drive company improvement efforts and sell others on why modifications and new approaches to processes should replace old methods.

required skills and training

Process Engineers must have a bachelor's degree in chemical or another engineering discipline, while a masters or PhD degree is often required or preferred.

Many employers prefer graduates with related coursework and a co-op placement for entry-level jobs. Many positions require several years of experience.

skills and certifications:

Process Engineers require licensing by a provincial or territorial association to practise as a Professional Engineer and approve reports and drawings. They must register within their province after graduation, as well as pass a professional licensing test in their discipline after three or four years of practise. A good command of written and spoken English and French is essential to effectively communicate process development with everyone involved.
