Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Assistant Chief Engineer will assist the Chief Engineer with supervising the overall operation and maintenance of plant utility systems including the following: boilers and pressure vessels, gas burning equipment, steam distribution and condensate return, HVAC, compressed air, ammonia, natural gas distribution, water and sewer, cooling tower, fire suppression, and all plant safety systems and equipment. After probation, the candidate will take over as Chief engineer for the facility.

Responsibilities
Operation, Repair, and Maintenance:
• Operate and maintain two high pressure steam boilers, a large industrial ammonia refrigeration system, and all related equipment to ensure reliable and efficient service
• Constantly monitor and control system components to maintain optimum operating efficiencies to ensure compliance to government standards
• Maintain records of purchases, installations, relocations, repairs, modifications, and operating hours of equipment as a basis for preventive maintenance routines
• Approve and maintain records of invoices
• Recommend changes in the structure of operations processes
• Manage the expenditure of resources to ensure adherence to budgetary limits
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate regular preventative and shutdown maintenance for all utilities and site services
Health & Safety and Compliance Management:
• Act as a key liaison between the company and Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA)
• Immediately log and report abnormal operating conditions to government regulatory agencies as per legislation
Supervision:
• Train operators and enforce and drive compliance of company safety and other policies/procedures
• Supervise a team of nine employees
Qualifications
• Second class Power Engineering Certificate
• Minimum 3-5 years related supervisory experience
• Solid practical knowledge of all branches of engineering
• Superior communication skills
• Proficient using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Knowledge and application of relevant health and safety/ environmental legislation
Desired Qualifications
• Organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities
• Resourceful and adaptable
• A self-starter with a positive attitude and strong work ethic
• Ability to analyze, present, and communicate information accurately and effectively
• Ability to make quick decisions in a fast-paced environment
• Clear thinker with strong judgement and demonstrated leadership skills
• Team building skills
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Keen attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to work independently and with a team
• Previous supervisory experience in a unionized setting would be considered an asset
• Training in leadership, crisis management, human relations, and health & safety would be considered an asset
