Reporting to the Manager, the Mechanical Engineer provides

technical support and design expertise in relation to mechanical engineering designs for transit related

facilities and structures. The Mechanical Engineer will retrieve as-built drawings, conduct site surveys,

define design scopes, complete designs, prepare conceptual and final drawings, prepare specifications

and contribute to the tendering and construction documents. The design work is subject to approval by

the Senior Engineer – Mechanical. The Mechanical Technologist will also provide technical assistance to

Plant Maintenance project management team and trades personnel on an as required basis.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Under technical direction/oversight from the Manager, the Mechanical Engineer provides

technical support and design expertise in relation to mechanical engineering work including heating,

ventilation, air-conditioning, plumbing, drainage, fire protection, high pressure piping, fluid storage and

distribution systems, bus hoists and other vehicle servicing equipment, emergency tunnel ventilation,

elevators, and escalators for all types of transit facilities and structures.
This involves:

Preparing Design Scope Clarifications by communicating with the work order originators and

stakeholders

Preparing Design Scope Clarification Reports;

Extracting existing drawings and conducting site surveys to determine existing conditions;

Developing mechanical designs, specifications and CADD drawings using Microsoft Office, Bentley

ProjectWise and MicroStation systems;

Researching and incorporating relevant codes and standards associated with the work, including but

not limited to, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, ASHRAE, American Society of Plumbing

Engineers, American National Standards Institute/American Society of Mechanical Engineers and

Canadian Standards Association

Conducting analysis and design calculations to determine final designs;

Carrying out new product investigations;

Preparing documents and drawings in other formats, such as PDF, as required;

Performing duties as specified in standard operating procedures and standard work instructions to

facilitate design delivery

Acting as design lead for projects assigned

 coordinating design with other design disciplines and trades as required;

 assisting Technical Coordinator in determining the requirements of Designated Substance Survey

and Locate Reference drawings;

 carrying out assigned field reviews to ensure that designs are built in general compliance with Issued

for Construction documents, Ontario Building Code and in accordance with company requirements.

Reviewing shop drawings;

Investigating and troubleshooting technical related problems.

Reviewing designs and studies prepared by consultants for accuracy, completeness, maintainability,

construct ability and compliance with Commission standards and applicable codes.

Stamping design drawings for Permit Drawings, Issued for Construction Drawings, Permit Close outs.

Education:

A Degree from a recognized University

5-10 years of experience with Mechanical systems (HVAC)

Strong Design skills (Microstation)

Strong communication skills both written and verbal
