ROLE OBJECTIVE:
The Principal Engineer is accountable for the overall technical direction, organization,
performance, quality and consistency of transmission engineering projects providing leadership
and management oversight for all phases of the engineering activities from the proposal to final
acceptance, including development of client relationships, ensuring adherence to work practices
and standards, and scheduling to meet project deliverables.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBLITIES:
 Manage total engineering effort ensuring projects are designed in accordance with client
and code requirements, industry standards, schedule and budget;
 Liaise with clients regarding project service delivery;
 Ensure conformance of drawings and engineering calculations with design, client and
code requirements;
 Verify and authenticate work products (i.e. drawings, calculations and engineering
reports);
 Lead and participate in client presentations;
 Monitor project progress, availability of resources, technical competency of design staff,
software requirements, and sub-consultant performance. Ensure corrective/remedial
action as required;
 Ensure development, maintenance and compliance of engineering work procedures and
standards, technical references and quality standards (QA/QC program);
 Lead/assist with project tenders and proposals including proposal writing, preparation,
review and approval of engineering estimates and timelines.
 Provide conceptual design and material take offs for EPC estimating;
 Review and approval of bid evaluations and recommendations for subcontracted services
and materials;
 Actively promote safety and constructability in designs;

 Provide guidance and leadership in the professional and career development of
subordinates including establishing goals and training requirements, recruitment,
performance evaluation, and succession planning and mentoring;
 Develop project material and installation specifications;
 Participate with project managers in developing and implementing project procedures,
reporting requirements, client interfaces, change requests, vendor interfaces,
identification and resolution of issues, and similar;
 Provide technical input to the review and analysis of project status reports, schedules and
cost reports;
 Ensure effective communication between members of the design team and the broader
project team;
 Actively network making contacts and developing business relationships with clients, subconsultants, vendors and industry associations;
 Identify engineering software requirements and participates in annual budgeting;
 Participate in industry activities, staying abreast of emerging technologies, industry
trends, products and software tools;
 Provide timely communication and reporting to senior management on project issues,
challenges and performance.
QUALIFICATIONS:
 Proven track record in the design of high voltage transmission and distribution facilities
ranging from 8 kV to 500 kV;
 Proven experience in leadership and management of technical staff (minimum 10 years’
supervisory experience) in engineering and project delivery;
 Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a wide spectrum of people;
 Positive outlook, strong client focus and results driven;
 Entrepreneurial approach and the ability to take on challenges in a changing
environment;
 Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and initiatives;
 B.Sc. in Electrical or Civil Engineering;
 Professional Engineer designation with the ability to be a responsible member / permit
holder;
 Experience working in a consulting engineering environment is an asset.
