One of our Federal Government clients is seeking a Senior Application/Software Architect (Level 3) to provide architectural leadership, strategic direction, and technical governance for the modernization of its mission-critical archival portfolio. In this role, you won't just build new systems; you will serve as the chief technical authority tasked with dismantling decades of complex technical debt. Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical authority to author Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), establish coding and design standards, and ensure strict alignment with accessibility (WCAG) and security requirements.
- Audit existing mission-critical systems built on legacy stacks (PHP 5.5, C modules, legacy JavaScript, SLES 12 Linux), analyze recurring issues, and draft definitive target-state architectures.
- Define target-state application architectures, modern design frameworks, and incremental migration strategies for mission-critical enterprise systems.
- Assess legacy application portfolios and aging software infrastructure to identify, prioritize, and systematically resolve deep technical debt and systemic operational risks.
- Review and optimize critical integration middleware and communication protocols to maximize performance, reliability, and security between foundational platforms.
- Review and validate complex solution designs while providing clear technical steering, knowledge transfer, and mentorship to internal development and operational teams.
Qualifications
- Valid Reliability level or above, federal security clearance.
- Several and recent years of professional experience as an Application or Software Architect.
- Experience designing, governing, and modernizing web applications and API-based architectures using PHP.
- Establishing integration patterns and technical frameworks for enterprise systems that run on PHP and/or C/C++ code modules.
- Ability to configure application architectures that natively integrate with Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle databases.
- Experience aligning federal or provincial public sector legacy architectures with corporate IT standards.
- Demonstrated past experience migrating system environments from legacy SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) versions.
