Responsibilities
Safety Planning & Pre-Job Risk Assessment
-Participate in project planning meetings to provide safety input during early design phases.
-Develop and review Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Safe Work Plans, and FLRAs for asset management projects.
-Verify permits, hazard assessments, and work procedures before project execution.
-Ensure that all contractors meet safety standards before work begins.
Contractor Safety & Field Compliance
-Conduct pre-job contractor orientations and verify contractor safety management systems.
-Perform field safety audits and compliance checks on active projects.
-Ensure that contractors adhere to all Permit-to-Work, Confined Space, Hot Work, and Energy Isolation (LOTO) requirements.
-Monitor critical work, including high-risk lifts, equipment commissioning, and shutdown activities.
Site Inspections & Incident Prevention
-Conduct daily field inspections to verify safe work practices and adherence to procedures.
-Identify non-compliance, unsafe conditions, and improvement opportunities.
-Work with Project Managers and Supervisors to address potential safety gaps before work begins
Safety Leadership & Training
-Coach and mentor project managers, engineers, and contractors on risk management strategies.
-Lead toolbox talks and safety stand-downs before high-risk project phases.
-Support HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies for critical assets, including stacker reclaimers, ship loaders, and potash dumper operations.
-Facilitate incident investigations and root cause analyses (ICAM, TapRoot, or 5-Whys) for asset management-related incidents.
Rotational Weekend & Critical Project Coverage
-Provide on-site support during major shutdowns, weekend projects, or high-risk tasks.
-Rotate weekend coverage every 3rd or 4th week to ensure critical project execution oversight.
-Work collaboratively with the Operations & Maintenance Safety Specialists to ensure 24/7 safety support.
Qualifications
-Registered Safety Professional and/or post sec-ondary education in Health and Safety
-Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent) preferred.
-5+ years of safety experience in heavy industry, construction, or terminal operations.
-Experience in project safety, contractor safety, or shutdown safety coordination.
-Familiarity with ISNetworld, Work Order Systems, and Incident Reporting Software.
-Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
-Strong risk assessment and hazard mitigation expertise.
-Knowledge of Canadian OH&S Regulations and industry best practices.
-Ability to facilitate contractor safety programs and inspections.
-Experience with Permit-to-Work, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and Hot Work Programs.
-Proficiency in HAZOP, ICAM investigations, and root cause analysis methodologies.
-Strong verbal and written communication skills.
-Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
-Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
