Our client, a leading firm in the legal sector, is seeking an HR Specialist – Compensation and Benefits for a 1-year contract. Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources, this role is responsible for the effective delivery and administration of the firm's compensation, payroll, and benefits programs. The specialist will play a key role in supporting annual compensation initiatives, managing bi-weekly and monthly payroll, and overseeing employee benefits administration. Additionally, this role will work closely with the HR team to support day-to-day operations aligned with the firm’s broader HR objectives.

Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Payroll
Accurately process bi-weekly and monthly payroll for 200+ employees using Ceridian PowerPay, ensuring compliance with federal and provincial regulations.
Manage payroll-related activities including annual bonus payments and ad-hoc transactions.
Prepare and validate year-end reports (e.g., T4s), issue T2200 forms as needed, and assist with audits.
Reconcile payroll data and ensure proper contributions and deductions are applied.
Compensation
Support compensation initiatives including:
Conducting and submitting annual compensation surveys.
Assisting in the year-end compensation cycle (e.g., preparing spreadsheets and communications).
Collaborating with HR colleagues to determine appropriate pay ranges for new hires.
Benefits
Administer onboarding and offboarding processes as they relate to benefits and leaves.
Manage wellness and fitness reimbursements through payroll.
Provide benefit orientation to new employees and assist with communication regarding plan changes.
Oversee medical leaves by liaising with third-party case managers and managing disability applications.
Ensure timely benefits enrollment, termination, and changes, and validate invoices for accuracy and budget alignment.
Operations & HR Support
Act as a primary contact for all payroll and benefits-related inquiries, liaising with vendors, employees, and internal teams.
Stay current on changes in legislation and best practices; recommend updates to internal policies as needed.
Support HR daily operations and contribute to the execution of annual projects and strategic initiatives.
Take on additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, Commerce, or a related field.
Minimum 5 years of HR experience, with at least 4 years specifically focused on payroll, compensation, or benefits.
Direct payroll processing experience is required; Ceridian PowerPay experience is highly preferred.
Experience in professional services or legal environments is an asset.
Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification is considered an asset.
Exceptional organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Flexible and dependable, especially around critical payroll deadlines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to clearly explain complex information.
Financially literate with a strong aptitude for technology; advanced MS Office skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) required.
Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
Professional, confidential, and tactful in handling sensitive matters.
Strong client service orientation and a collaborative, team-first mindset.
