Our client is looking for a Full Stack Engineer with deep Core Java expertise and Cash Equities / Front-Office Trading experience to join their team in Toronto.
This is an opportunity to work on a global electronic trading platform and Order Management System (OMS) used in a fast-paced capital markets environment. You'll help build, enhance, optimize, and support highly automated, scalable, and performance-critical trading technology.
Important: This is a Hands-On Coding Role
You must be actively coding in your current/recent role.
The team is specifically looking for engineers with strong, hands-on Core Java expertise. Candidates should expect to demonstrate their coding and problem-solving abilities during the technical interview process through live coding and working with existing code.
This is NOT a role for someone who has moved primarily into architecture, management, or coordination.
This is a hybrid Toronto-based role requiring:
3 days per week in the office in downtown Toronto
Production support operates on a rotational basis.
Depending on the rotation, working hours may begin as early as 7:00 a.m. EST or extend to approximately 6:00 p.m. EST.
The team provides coverage for early-morning trading activity and production releases.
Occasional work on Canadian holidays may be required to support global operations.
The team works globally across Canada, Mexico, USA, and Asia, so flexibility and strong communication are important.
Interview Process
Candidates should expect 2–3 technical interview rounds, with the potential for:
Live coding
Screen-sharing exercises
Reviewing and responding to existing code
Technical problem-solving and debugging scenarios
Discussion of real-world production and trading-system challenges
Final in-person interview in Toronto
Be prepared to code. The technical interviews are designed to assess how you actually approach and solve problems, not simply what technologies appear on your resume.
Advantages
Why Join?
You'll have the opportunity to work on mission-critical electronic trading technology within a global Capital Markets organization, contributing to systems where scalability, performance, reliability, and engineering quality directly matter.
If you're a hands-on Java engineer with genuine Cash Equities/front-office trading experience and want to work on challenging, high-performance technology, we'd love to hear from you.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Design, develop, test, and deploy enhancements to a global electronic trading platform.
Configure, build, enhance, and maintain components of a new Order Management System (OMS).
Develop and optimize highly performant, low-latency Java applications.
Provide production support for critical trading technology.
Troubleshoot complex technical and production issues.
Analyze and improve application performance using data-driven optimization techniques.
Work with concurrency, memory management, JVM tuning, and real-time processing.
Automate repetitive tasks and reduce operational toil.
Collaborate with software engineers, traders, and technology teams across Canada, Mexico, New York, and Asia.
Support production releases and trading activities across different time zones.
Qualifications
What We're Looking For:
Must-Have
Strong Core Java expertise – non-negotiable
Cash Equities / Front-Office Trading experience – non-negotiable.
Extensive hands-on Java development experience.
Strong understanding of:
Concurrency / multithreading
JVM tuning
Garbage collection
Memory management
Performance optimization
Real-time systems
Experience developing low-latency and/or high-performance applications.
Experience working directly with traders or front-office stakeholders.
Strong production support and troubleshooting experience.
Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
Good command of Linux/UNIX command-line environments.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced global environment.
Demonstrated experience coding on a daily basis.
Nice-to-Have
Order Management System (OMS) experience.
FIX protocol.
Kafka and/or Aeron.
Docker or Podman.
Kubernetes.
CI/CD.
Profiling and metrics-based performance optimization.
Experience using agentic AI/AI tools for software maintenance and development.
React or other front-end experience.
Don't Have React? That's OK.
Despite the Full Stack Engineer title, extensive front-end experience is not required for this role.
The priority is deep Java/backend engineering expertise and capital markets/trading experience. React experience is considered an asset but is not a requirement.
The Ideal Candidate
You may be a great fit if you are a:
Java Engineer
Senior Java Developer
Capital Markets Developer
Electronic Trading Developer
Low-Latency Java Engineer
Front-Office Developer
Cash Equities Developer
Trading Systems Engineer
OMS Developer
You should be someone who enjoys solving difficult technical problems, understands what happens under the hood of a Java application, and is comfortable working in an environment where performance, reliability, and speed matter.
Experience Level
The original requirement calls for 10+ years of software engineering experience, particularly in low-latency or real-time systems.
However, 10 years is not an absolute requirement.
Candidates with approximately 5+ years of highly relevant experience may be considered where they demonstrate exceptional Core Java, Cash Equities, and front-office trading expertise.
Relevant technical depth matters more than simply counting years of experience.
Summary
Apply Today
If you're still coding every day, understand high-performance Java, and have worked in a front-office trading environment, this could be an excellent opportunity to take on a high-impact role in global electronic trading.
