Reporting directly to the Senior Legal Counsel, you'll play a crucial role in providing comprehensive legal, administrative, and clerical support to the entire Legal Unit. Responsibilities
- Provide legal, administrative, and clerical support to the Legal Unit.
- Receive draft affidavits from social workers and format them for lawyer review.
- Type, prepare, and coordinate the service and filing of legal documents, including motions, orders, and Settlement Conference briefs.
- Prepare and organize all files for the Wednesday Administrative List, ensuring all information is current.
- Prepare Court Appearance forms and assist social workers by providing information on their files.
- Prepare orders from judge's endorsements and distribute them to workers and lawyers.
- Provide support for all trials, including the preparation of Trial Records, Affidavit Briefs, and Summons to Witness.
- Maintain and update the Legal Case Database and CPIN, and manage the Court Diary.
- Arrange for service of documents by Process Servers and accept service of material for legal counsel.
Qualifications
- A Paralegal Diploma, Diploma in a legal secretarial program, or a certificate in law from a recognized community college (or successful completion of the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario courses).
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an administrative legal support position, specifically within a family law practice.
- Experience with court proceedings, including the service and drafting of court documents.
- Familiarity with the Child, Youth and Family Services Act is a strong asset.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and proprietary child welfare systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated sound interpersonal and organizational skills, with a high attention to detail.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage priorities, and meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
- A respectful and compassionate demeanor and a knowledge and commitment to anti-oppressive/anti-racist philosophy.
