Responsibilities
- Direct daily heat treating processes including hardening, tempering, annealing, and stress relieving for high-precision steel tooling and industrial cutting components
- Execute thermal recipes while monitoring distortion, warpage, cracking, and dimensional changes during austenitizing
- Perform precision surface grinding and Blanchard grinding on both annealed and hardened metals
- Conduct quality inspections using micrometers, height gauges, test tables, and hardness testers to respect tight tolerances
- Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, datums, surface finishes, and CAD files
- Source raw materials, manage supplier relationships, and oversee technical procurement for specialty tool steels
- Troubleshoot material wear, soft/hard parts, grain structure issues, and part failures through root cause analysis
- Maintain strict shop safety protocols and drive continuous improvement in daily shop operations
Qualifications
- Strong background as a Machinist, Toolmaker, or Grind Hand with conventional turning, milling, and grinding experience
- Solid understanding of metallurgy and heat treatment for common steel grades
- Practical experience with Blanchard and surface grinding on hardened materials
- Proven ability to troubleshoot heat treat defects such as cracking, warpage, or improper hardness
- High attention to detail with strong ownership over quality control to prevent scrap on high-value parts
- Safety-first mindset with a cautious, methodical approach in a physically demanding shop environment
