Job Title: Plant Buyer
Location: Cascades Containerboard Packaging, Calgary, AB
The Plant Buyer is responsible for the timely procurement of quality maintenance materials, supplies, and services at optimal cost. This role supports the maintenance team by aligning purchasing activities with scheduled needs, maintaining vendor relationships, ensuring compliance with company procurement policies, and leveraging SAP and PLM systems for accuracy and efficiency. Key Responsibilities:
- Procure MRO materials, components, and services to support maintenance operations.
- Evaluate and select suppliers based on cost, quality, service, and delivery timelines (excluding SDI or Corporate Supplier List purchases).
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and contracts to maximize value.
- Issue and manage purchase requisitions, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Confirm delivery timelines and follow up on late or incorrect deliveries.
- Review incoming goods or service for accuracy before processing goods receipts in SAP.
- Investigate and resolve delivery issues, invoice discrepancies, and billing delays.
- Monitor supplier performance, market conditions, and material availability.
- Inventory Organization/Control – Track maintenance spare part and operational supply level inventories and ensure accuracy of the inventory database in SAP. This involves organizing storerooms in a logical and neat format, increasing inventories accordingly as new parts arrive, and depleting inventories as parts are consumed.
- Inventory Optimization – Analysis of spare part and operating supply inventory targets on a regular basis in efforts to optimize inventory levels. Considerations involved in setting inventory safety stock levels in SAP with coordination with maintenance teams including part availability, part cost, cycle count, importance to the operation, # used in the plant, lead times, usage history, etc.
- Reporting – Use the plant maintenance logbook/SAP to track outstanding spending for maintenance parts and operating supplies; work with maintenance teams and report to maintenance manager to establish month end accruals; tracks and reports performance against Monthly Spare Part Inventory Levels, Maintenance Spending and Plant Material Control Accuracy.
- Manage returns of defective or incorrect products.
- Ensure compliance with internal procurement policies and participate in scheduled training and P2P sessions.
- Notify requesters of non-stock item deliveries and support material kitting for scheduled work orders.
- Manage unplanned goods issues and return processes for incorrect or defective items.
- Organize and maintain a clean, efficient storeroom layout, optimizing for accessibility and usage.
- Track open POs, service completions, and work order closures in SAP.
- Prepare and participate in weekly and monthly maintenance planning and MRO meetings.
- Ensure that all procurement and inventory activities are aligned with PLM system requirements.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical background or supply chain discipline or equivalent education combined with relevant job experience. Strong technical understanding and interest.
Experience:
- 3-5 years of experience in purchasing, storeroom, or inventory control in a manufacturing environment.
Skills:
- Proficiency in SAP (MM module or equivalent) and familiarity with PLM systems.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and coordination skills with vendors and internal teams.
- Basic understanding of maintenance operations and MRO materials.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and manage multiple priorities.
- Knowledge of procure-to-pay processes and maintenance-related purchasing preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move materials and maintain a clean and safe storeroom environment.
