Advantages
Financial Growth: Competitive base salary plus a performance-driven profit-sharing program.
Retirement & Health: Comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, and vision) and RRSP matching to support your long-term goals.
Vibrant Culture: An engaged work environment featuring regular employee activities, including weekly snack days, quarterly team events, and summer BBQs.
Career Development: Professional development support, including coverage for P.Eng. fees, technical training, and industry conferences.
Impactful Work: The opportunity to lead varied, complex refrigeration projects and directly influence internal standard designs and control strategies.
Core Values: A culture that prioritizes safety, technical excellence, and the delivery of practical, field-proven solutions.
Responsibilities
We are looking for a Senior Refrigeration Engineer/Designer who can design robust refrigeration systems that meet customers’ cooling needs. You will work with sales, engineering, and production teams to:
- Evaluate customers’ process to determine their cooling requirements (load profiles, safety and operability constraints).
- Design complete refrigeration systems and controls strategies that meet customer requirements in the real life. - - Support commissioning and troubleshooting in the field to ensure systems perform as designed and root cause any issues.
Additional Responsibilities:
1. Applications and Sales Support
Customer Analysis: Evaluate and understand customer process requirements, operating profiles (continuous vs. batch, pull-down vs. steady load), and specific constraints.
Technical Validation: Verify Sales’ proposals by performing cooling load, energy balance, and equipment sizing calculations.
Bidding Support: Support the sales team during the bidding phase by providing technical insight and performance estimates.
System Design: Design skidded or built-up refrigeration systems and process chillers using HFC/HFO and ammonia.
Operational Strategy: Define system operating envelopes, setpoints, and capacity-control strategies (VFDs, slide valves, cylinder unloading, etc.).
Process Mapping: Develop and review process flows and P&IDs for new systems and major retrofits.
2. Controls and Equipment Operation
Controls Narratives: Develop clear controls narratives that link process requirements to system behavior and setpoints.
Programming Collaboration: Work with PLC programmers to define sequences of operation, alarm strategies, and interlocks that protect equipment and product.
Safety Logic: Provide input to PLC/HMI logic to ensure the system operates safely and efficiently while protecting against potential misuse.
Commissioning Support: Support commissioning teams by validating design intent, tuning control loops, and resolving startup issues to ensure the system meets customer requirements.
3. Project Execution & Documentation
Technical Documentation: Produce and/or review design reports, datasheets, equipment schedules, and O&M manuals.
Design Oversight: Work with CAD/design teams to review GA layouts and skid designs for serviceability, piping practices, and constructability.
Risk Management: Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, risk assessments, and value-engineering sessions.
Cross-Functional Support: Provide technical support to project managers, manufacturing, and procurement when design changes or substitutions are required.
4. Customer Support & Life-Cycle Involvement
Root-Cause Analysis: Support the service team with troubleshooting chronic system issues, such as capacity shortfalls, nuisance trips, oil management, or poor pull-down.
System Upgrades: Recommend and scope upgrade projects, including retrofits, controls upgrades, capacity expansions, and efficiency improvements.
Technical Training: Provide occasional training to customer operators and internal teams on refrigeration system operations and best practices.
5. Safety, Codes & Compliance
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes and standards, including CSA B52, ASHRAE 15, applicable building and mechanical codes, and provincial regulatory requirements.
Safety Integration: Incorporate safety devices, relief systems, and safe operating procedures into every system design.
Standardization: Contribute to the development of internal engineering standards and design guidelines.
Qualifications
Must-Have Qualifications:
Professional Experience: 8+ years of experience in industrial or commercial refrigeration system design, applications engineering, or installation/commissioning technical support.
System Design Expertise: Demonstrated experience designing complete refrigeration systems and involvement in system integration with customer processes.
Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of refrigeration cycles, compressor performance, superheat control, oil management, and refrigeration controls.
Drafting & Design Proficiency: Proven ability to read and produce P&IDs, control narratives, and general arrangement (GA) drawings.
Codes & Compliance: Familiarity with Canadian codes and standards related to refrigeration, including CSA B52, ASHRAE 15, provincial regulations, and ASME B31.3/B31.5.
Communication Skills: Strong ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders, including Sales, Production, Service, Field Technicians, and Management.
Nice-to-Have / Assets:
Professional Designation: Licensed P.Eng. in Ontario.
Practical Experience: Journeyperson Refrigeration Mechanic (e.g., 313A) or significant hands-on commissioning and service experience.
Controls Knowledge: Experience with PLC/HMI platforms (e.g., Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider) and BMS integration.
Natural Refrigerants: Experience with industrial refrigeration using natural refrigerants (NH₃, CO₂) in addition to Freon systems.
Industry Software: Familiarity with selection tools and software from major compressor and component manufacturers.
