Responsibilities
-Take-Offs & Quantification: Analyze engineering drawings and project specifications to accurately calculate material and installation quantities.
-Cost Estimation: Draft detailed cost estimates for major, complex projects both regionally and across Canada.
-Strategic Planning: Evaluate client blueprints to understand project scope, creating pre-construction plans that serve as the foundation for the final estimate.
-Risk & Contract Review: Assess all incoming tender packages and contract documents, collaborating with corporate legal counsel to mitigate risk.
-Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with project scheduling, procurement, planning, and bid proposal teams to ensure alignment.
-Stakeholder Presentations: Formulate and deliver comprehensive estimate presentations to internal leadership and corporate clients.
-Relationship Management: Cultivate and maintain strong, reliable partnerships with sub-contractors, vendors, consultants, and clients.
-Process Optimization: Work alongside the estimating department to drive continuous improvement and optimize bidding workflows.
Qualifications
-Background: Post-secondary credential in Mechanical Engineering, or a matching track record in specialized mechanical cost estimation.
-Professional Experience: A solid foundation (typically 5 or more years) managing mechanical estimates for large-scale, high-value projects.
-Industry Familiarity: A strong handle on the Canadian construction landscape, market rates, and regional bidding trends.
-Sector Expertise: Background in heavy industries—such as mining, hydro power, oil and gas, or industrial processing—is highly valued.
-Communication Skills: Fully proficient in English (written and verbal); working knowledge or fluency in French is a strong advantage.
-Technical Toolkit: Strong command of standard office productivity suites alongside digital takeoff tools like Bluebeam or equivalent estimating software.
-Interpersonal Capabilities: Proven track record in professional presentations and contract negotiations with diverse project stakeholders.
-Adaptability: Willingness to travel periodically for on-site reviews, field walks, and face-to-face client brief sessions.
