Our client is currently looking for a Mechanical Prototype Engineer
This person will serve two critical functions:
Project Mentor: Directly oversee Mechanical Engineering interns as they execute a Proof of Concept (POC) for a camera hardware solution designed for retail bays.
...
Program Architect: Help define the formal requirements and infrastructure for a scalable Mechanical Engineering internship program.
The Ideal Candidate:
We are looking for someone with an academic background (current or former faculty/Ph.D.) who also has "boots on the ground" experience with hardware prototyping and testing. They need to be as comfortable reviewing CAD files as they are designing a curriculum.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the transition from lab-bench prototypes to designs that can be manufactured at scale, specifically focusing on injection molding or sheet metal constraints for retail environments.
Define and execute testing protocols for the camera housing, ensuring it meets specific Ingress Protection (IP) ratings for dust and moisture, and "retail-tough" durability (IK impact ratings).
Guide the intern in selecting cost-effective sensors and materials, teaching them how to balance high-performance engineering with the unit-cost realities of retail deployments.
Mentor the Intern: Guide them through a 16-week roadmap (Hardware selection -Lab Testing, CAD Prototyping and Executive Presentation).
Design the Framework: Help build a repeatable "Syllabus" and evaluation rubric for future ME interns.
Technical Oversight: Ensure the Camera POC meets engineering standards for image clarity, durability (IP ratings), and retail integration.
Must-Haves:
Academic Credential: Master’s or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Faculty experience is a major plus).
Hard Skills: Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks/Fusion 360) and experience with hardware testing/prototyping.
Mentorship DNA: A proven track record of developing junior engineering talent.
Pay rate $45 - $55 per hour based on experience
Please send your resume in confidence to paul.dusome@randstad.ca
