Ashland, Virginia Paper Mill
At our Ashland, VA paper mill, you will have the opportunity to apply your technical expertise to support safe, reliable, and efficient mill operations, contributing directly to the performance of our paper machine. We produce high‑quality, lightweight, 100% recycled linerboard and medium (fluting paper) for the North American market, with a strong focus on safety, sustainability, and operational excellence.
As the Quality Manager, you will be a key member of the mill leadership team, responsible for ensuring product consistency, system reliability, and continuous improvement across all quality processes. You will collaborate closely with Operations, Maintenance, Continuous Improvement, and Corporate Quality to uphold our commitment to customer satisfaction and operational performance.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and develop the mill’s Quality team, providing coaching, feedback, and performance management to build capability, engagement, and accountability.
- Promote a proactive quality culture focused on ownership, problem‑solving, and continuous improvement.
- Serve as the primary quality representative for the mill with corporate teams, customers, auditors, and regulatory agencies.
Quality Systems & Standards
- Maintain, monitor, and continuously improve the mill’s Quality Management System (QMS).
- Ensure compliance with internal standards, customer requirements, and regulatory specifications.
- Act as the site Subject Matter Expert for certifications such as FSC, SFI, RPTA, and related programs.
- Lead internal audits and prepare the site for external audits and certifications.
- Build strong relationships with customers and support quality‑related inquiries, complaints, and trial requests.
- Utilize SAP and other systems effectively to document quality activities, audits, and corrective actions.
Continuous Improvement
- Own the Quality Pillar, including Voice of the Customer, Quality Assurance, and Quality Control.
- Partner with Operations to identify process variability and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Apply structured problem‑solving tools such as RCA, 5 Whys, DMAIC, and PFMEA to reduce defects and deviations.
- Lead and participate in cross‑functional initiatives to improve product consistency, process reliability, and customer satisfaction.
Product Quality & Analytics
- Track, analyze, and report quality KPIs and trends to identify systemic issues and improvement opportunities.
- Oversee site laboratory operations, including equipment management, calibration, maintenance, and replacement.
- Support process control improvements in collaboration with Operations and laboratory teams.
- Ensure execution of daily quality management activities through strong teamwork and communication.
- Participate in trials, qualification runs, and product or process development initiatives supporting mill and customer needs.
YOUR QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, Science, or related field; equivalent experience will be considered
- 5+ years of experience in a quality role within a manufacturing environment
- Solid understanding of quality systems, standards, and structured problem‑solving tools
- Strong analytical, communication, and data‑driven decision‑making skills
- Ability to engage frontline teams and lead change using a servant‑leadership approach
- Experience in paper, pulp, packaging, converting, or continuous‑process manufacturing strongly preferred
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent continuous improvement experience
- Hands‑on experience with QMS implementation and/or ISO‑based systems
- Familiarity with SPC, MSA, and statistical quality tools
