Responsibilities
Investigate, assess, and manage claims made under title insurance policies, including but not limited to claims related to title defects, tax, and utility arrears.
Independently determine and apply appropriate coverage positions for residential and commercial policies, accounting for varying regulatory requirements.
Communicate complex coverage decisions, including claim denials, to external customers (homeowners, law firms, lenders) with exceptional customer service.
Retain and instruct third-party experts (outside counsel, adjusters) as needed for claims resolution and manage their service levels.
Analyze third-party reports (surveys, appraisals, legal opinions) for accuracy and to assist with coverage determination.
Negotiate settlements and release provisions; conduct file reviews for potential recovery.
Determine, set, and maintain financial settlement and expense reserves for claims files.
Utilize claims software, Outlook, and Excel to manage a high volume of files while maintaining meticulous organization and attention to detail.
Qualifications
Law Clerk designation from a post-secondary institution or equivalent experience.
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Real Estate Law Clerk in a firm or title insurance environment.
Strong practical knowledge of the real estate closing process (open to close) and ability to review and re-calculate adjustments and read title searches.
Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret and apply legal principles to specific claim issues.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, oriented towards delivering a superior customer service experience, especially when delivering adverse news.
A positive, coachable, and collaborative attitude; must be willing to learn, ask questions, and possess the sense of urgency required for a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
