Senior Project Leader – CAPEX
Reports to: Mill Manager
The Senior Project Leader - Capex is responsible for leading the planning, execution, and completion of major capital expenditures locally at Cascades Bear Island. This position ensures all initiatives are delivered safely, within scope, on schedule, and within approved budgets, while supporting the mill’s long-term reliability, efficiency, and growth objectives.
The Senior Project Leader - Capex will work in close partnership with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Safety, Procurement, and external contractors. This role requires strong technical judgment, operational awareness, and a collaborative, solutions‑focused approach.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning and Execution
- Develop and maintain project scope definitions, cost estimates, schedules, resource plans, and risk assessments.
- Coordinate engineering work, contractor activities, and mill support functions to ensure effective project execution with minimal operational disruption.
- Monitor field work, ensuring adherence to quality standards, safety expectations, and mill procedures.
- Manage project budgets and ensure spending aligns with corporate capex approval processes.
- Prepare financial justifications, project charters, and cost tracking updates.
- Identify cost‑saving opportunities and maintain accurate forecasting throughout project execution.
- Lead with a safety first mindset, ensuring all contractors and mill employees follow established EHS policies and regulatory requirements.
- Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering to ensure project alignment with mill priorities.
- Provide routine project updates to the Mill Manager and other stakeholders, including progress reviews, risk assessments, and action plans.
- Facilitate effective communication between internal teams, contractors, and suppliers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Project Management, Industrial Technology, or related field; equivalent practical experience will be considered.
- Minimum 5–7 years of experience managing capital or industrial projects within manufacturing; experience in pulp & paper or heavy industry preferred.
- Demonstrated success leading complex, multi‑disciplinary capital projects.
- Strong knowledge of project management methods, cost control, and scheduling.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, equipment specifications, and industrial standards.
- Proficiency with project management tools and MS Office applications.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across all levels of the mill.
